About Shot and Scale

Home espresso machine pulling a shot, the kind of home setup Shot and Scale guides cover

Clear, practical espresso gear advice for home baristas, without the marketing fluff.

Honest buying guides for scales, grinders, machines and accessories.

Why Shot and Scale exists

Buying espresso gear is harder than it should be. Product listings repeat the same marketing claims, “best of” lists rarely mention drawbacks, and it’s hard to tell when a $200 upgrade actually changes what ends up in your cup.

Shot and Scale helps home baristas choose espresso scales, grinders, machines and accessories with confidence. We explain which features matter, what’s worth paying for, and when a cheaper option does the job just as well.

How we research

We don’t run a lab, and we don’t claim to have tested every product we write about. Instead, every guide is built the same way:

Official specs first

Dimensions, accuracy and features come from manufacturer documentation, not from reseller listings.

Patterns in owner reviews

We look for the praise and complaints that keep coming up across verified buyers, not one-off opinions.

Drawbacks, always

Every pick lists its weaknesses and an alternative. When a detail can’t be verified, we say so.

We also keep three kinds of information separate in every guide: verified facts (from official sources), manufacturer claims (what the brand says, which we can’t confirm), and our assessment (our opinion on who a product suits). You should always be able to tell which is which.

What you’ll find on Shot and Scale

Our guides fall into four groups, so you can jump straight to the gear you’re weighing up:

  • Espresso scales: compact and low-profile scales, and how to use one to dial in.
  • Grinders: espresso-capable hand grinders and what to look for.
  • Accessories: tampers, dosing funnels and upgrades for Breville machines.
  • Guides: brew ratios, bitter shots and portafilter sizes.

How we make money

Shot and Scale is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases (through the Amazon Associates program). If you buy through a link on this site, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Commission never decides which products we recommend, and we’ll recommend a cheaper product when it’s the better choice. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Keeping guides current

Prices, availability and product lineups change often. We review buying guides when new models launch or when a recommended product is discontinued, and each guide shows when it was last updated. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.
