A compact scale can still be the wrong size for your espresso machine. The cup needs room under the portafilter, the scale needs a stable place on the tray, and you need to see the display while the shot runs.
Start with those checks. Then decide whether you want a timer on the scale or simply a way to weigh your beans and grounds.
This shortlist compares three options for different routines. We have not tested these products ourselves; recommendations are based on the product information linked below. They are not guarantees of fit, accuracy or speed.

Quick choice: which one matches your routine?
| Your priority | Option to consider | Main reason | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A rechargeable scale with a timer | Maestri House S2 | Automatic and manual timing in a square body | Its approximately 20 mm height still needs checking against your cup clearance |
| Several brewing modes in a compact scale | Timemore Basic Mini | Regular, espresso and pour-over modes | More modes add controls to learn; confirm dimensions for the exact version |
| Weighing beans and grounds separately | Greater Goods 750 g | A protective lid that doubles as a weighing tray | Treat it as a dosing choice; use a separate shot timer and check availability |
If you want to weigh and time espresso on the same device, start with the S2 and Basic Mini. Consider Greater Goods if weighing the dose is your main need.
Measure before you choose
Use the cup and portafilter you actually brew with.
- Measure the usable tray surface. Check both width and front-to-back depth. The scale needs stable support.
- Measure the clearance. With the portafilter installed, measure from the tray to the lowest obstruction above the cup.
- Subtract your cup height. What remains is the theoretical space for the scale. Leave extra room to move the cup comfortably.
- Include the working setup. Check whether published height includes any mat or feet, and whether the cup would hide the display.
- Check the exact model. Similar product names do not guarantee identical dimensions.
For example, a 100 mm gap and a 75 mm cup leave 25 mm before allowing movement space. A 25 mm scale would use all of that clearance.
Maestri House S2: for weighing and timing together
The S2 combines a rechargeable battery with automatic and manual timing. The manufacturer lists its size as 4.13 × 4.13 × 0.78 inches—approximately 105 × 105 × 20 mm.
Choose it if: you want a timer on the scale and your tray can accommodate that square footprint.
Skip it if: your cup already sits close to the portafilter. A compact footprint does not compensate for insufficient height clearance.
Our take: this is a useful starting point for someone who wants weighing and timing in one device. Confirm the measurements before comparing extra features.
Timemore Basic Mini: for multiple brewing modes
Timemore describes the Basic Mini as a compact scale with regular, espresso and pour-over modes, including automatic timing features.
Choose it if: you want those different modes and are willing to learn how they operate.
Skip it if: you prefer the simplest possible routine and would not use the additional modes.
Our take: compare the features you would actually use. An extra mode is only valuable if it makes your own routine easier. Confirm the dimensions and instructions for the exact version offered by the seller.
Greater Goods 750 g: for weighing the dose
This model is listed with a 750 g capacity, 0.1 g display increments and a lid that doubles as a weighing tray. Its listed dimensions are 5.7 × 3 × 0.7 inches.
Choose it if: you mainly want to weigh beans or grounds and already have another way to time a shot.
Skip it if: your priority is an integrated espresso timer or weighing heavier brewing equipment.
Our take: a useful alternative for a narrower task, rather than the default choice for everyone pulling espresso. Check the combined weight of your container and contents against the capacity.
Availability note: check for a current offer and delivery to your location before choosing this option.
What matters beyond size?
Readability is not the same as accuracy. A display showing tenths of a gram does not, by itself, prove an accuracy tolerance or response speed.
Choose the timing method you will use. Manual timing gives you control over when the clock starts. Automatic modes can use different triggers; read the instructions before comparing shot times.
Treat water-resistance claims carefully. Follow the exact model’s care instructions. Do not assume a coffee scale can be submerged or rinsed under a tap.
Which should you choose?
For weighing and timing on one device, compare the S2 and Basic Mini after measuring your setup. For weighing beans and grounds, the Greater Goods model offers a separate route.
If your existing scale already fits, is readable during brewing and does what you need, you may not need a replacement.
Choose the model that solves the problem you actually have.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a kitchen scale for espresso?
You may be able to use your existing scale if it fits, supports the cup securely and gives a readable display during brewing. Check its resolution and response in your routine; a 0.1 g display does not by itself prove accuracy.
Will a low-profile scale fit on a Breville Bambino?
Fit depends on the exact scale, cup and portafilter. Measure the usable drip-tray width and depth, then subtract your cup height from the gap under the installed portafilter. Leave extra room to move the cup and see the display.
