Why do 54mm Breville machines use 53.3mm tampers?

Breville quotes these portafilters as 54mm, but the inside of the basket, which is what the tamper has to fit, measures closer to 53.3mm. Tamper makers size for the basket, so you’ll see “53.3mm”, “53mm” and “53/54mm” tampers all sold for the same machines.

When you have a choice, 53.3mm leaves the smallest gap around the edge of the basket. Our tamper guide for Breville 54mm machines compares the best options.

How to measure your basket

If you’re not sure of your Breville portafilter size, or which model you have, or you’ve bought a third-party basket, measure it:

  1. Take the basket out of the portafilter.
  2. Lay a ruler across the inside of the rim at its widest point.
  3. About 53mm means a Breville 54mm-family basket. About 58mm means a 58mm basket.

Measure the basket, not the outside of the portafilter. Some Breville portafilters are wider across the body than the basket inside them.

Why the size matters for accessories

  • Tampers and puck screens must match the basket’s inside diameter: 53.3mm for 54mm machines.
  • Dosing funnels sit on the portafilter rim, so they’re sold as 54mm or 58mm. See our dosing funnel guide.
  • Bottomless portafilters must match the machine’s group head: 54mm for the Bambino-to-Barista family, 58mm for the Dual Boiler and Oracle.
  • Baskets need to match the portafilter. Breville’s 54mm double basket is sold as an 18g basket.

What about the Barista Express Impress?

The Barista Express Impress uses a 54mm stainless steel portafilter, according to Breville. Its difference is assisted tamping: Breville says the machine applies a constant 22lb tamp with a 7-degree “barista twist”. You may not need a separate tamper at all, but if you buy one for the odd shot, choose 53.3mm.

Upgrading a 54mm Breville?

If you own a Bambino Plus, our Bambino Plus accessories guide lists the upgrades in the order that makes the biggest difference. Most of it also applies to the Barista Express, Pro and Touch.

The Bambino and Bambino Plus both use a 54mm portafilter, the same size as the Barista Express, Pro and Touch.
